The number of composters being built across the world is simply staggering. From small backyard units to industrial size waste processing facilities, composting has taken our eco-conscious world by storm. What many people are surprised to learn when they first start learning about composting is that it is not quite as simple as taking your lawn and food scraps and putting them in a container to decompose.

Indeed, composting is a lot like cooking. You need to have the right mix of ingredients to create a high quality compost that can be used to keep everything from lawns to flower beds green and growing. In addition to the grass, peels, and fallen leaves, adding crushed walnut shells helps complete the mix. Not only do crushed walnut shells contain nutrients that will enhance the composting mix, but they create spaces within the compost pile that make for more complete aeration and drainage.

This aeration and drainage helps speed up the composting process. And, the faster your compost pile decomposes, the sooner you can spread it on the garden to make new plants grow.  While the compost pile will most certainly be ready before the shells themselves have fully broken down, they don¡¯t need to be removed from the pile as they will continue to decompose within the soil. Effectively, it¡¯s like adding a continual release fertilizer to a garden that will continue to fertilize long after a gardener has tilled and turned the soil.

In addition to using crushed walnut shells in compost, they can also be used as mulching material. Their structure and composition makes them ideal for helping to regulate soil temperature, keeping weeds down, and improving soil structure. The only thing landscapers need to do is to ensure that the juglone contained within the crushed walnut shells won¡¯t negatively interact with the plant species they are protecting.

We would be happy to discuss the many benefits crushed walnut shells have to offer. We invite you to contact Flowspec with your questions and to learn more about the many products we have available for sale and distribution.
