RED WALNUTS GRAFTING
Red walnuts belong to Juglans Regia variety. In order to enrich China's walnut varieties and meet consumers’ diverse needs, Shangluo Shengda Industrial Corporation Limited is the first Chinese company that began trial and research on grafting of Livermore Red Walnut saplings from California in November 2014. Shangluo Shengda arrived at the commissioned red walnuts seedlings introduction agreement with Beijing Forestry University Forest Science Co., Ltd. in November 2014; in mid-March 2015, 100pcs of Livermore Grafted Red Walnut saplings were introduced from California, USA, and Beijing Forestry University was commissioned to sample 5 walnut seedlings for quality, pest quarantine and re-inspection; in Fulongwan Community, Sihao Street Office, Luonan County, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province in early April 2015, 95 pcs of imported grafted Robert Livermore walnut seedlings and branches cut from the upper part of the graft seedlings were granted to the 3-year-old Chinese walnut tree. And a 1.34 hectare area maternal garden was built. Thereafter, regional pilots and seedlings promotion and breeding were carried out in Luofu Town, Huayin City, Shang Town, Danfeng County, and Kuquan Town, Yijun County, Shaanxi Province. Through 5-year experiment and research, demonstration & promotion, the production results were good 86.7 hectare demonstration garden up to the high standard has been built at present. The walnut saplings research project got honors such as the 2017 Shangluo’s Science and Technology and Shangluo’s First Prize of Science and Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. In August 2018, it passed the preliminary review by the Variety Approval Committee of Shaanxi Province Forest University. In January 2019, approved by the Crop Variety Approval Committee of the Shaanxi Provincial Forestry Bureau, "Red Kernel Walnut" was rated as a good crop variety suitable for promotion and application in forestry production within a suitable range in Shaanxi Province. In order to promote the planting of red walnuts nationwide, Shangluo Shengda Industrial has formed partnership with a number of forest research institutes and leading forestry companies nationwide for trial planting of the red walnut grafted seedlings.
EARLY FRUIT AND GOOD HARVEST
The introduced grafted red walnut saplings belong to the high-yield variety, which generally blooms and bears fruit in the second year after planting. In other words, you will reap economic benefits in the 2nd year when planting Shengda’s red walnut saplings. In addition, the red kernel walnut is very rare variety. In light of the current market conditions, the retail price of red walnuts in shell is up to 28~34USD/Kgs, enabling rapid return on investment.
1. High-yield: Grafted red walnut seedlings can bloom and bear fruit in the second year after planting. In the 3rd year, 85.4% of the branch will produce fruit, 88.4% of the lateral bud bears fruit while each branch produces 1.65 fruits on average. During the high-yield period, the high-level management demonstration garden can produce 3000-3750Kgs of red walnuts in shell per hectare.
2. Good variety: The Red Walnuts are characterized by medium size, smooth surface, nice shape, full easy-to-take kernel, bright red kernel coat, oily and crisp flavor. The average diameter of the nut is 3.44cm, the unit weight is 12.75g, the thickness of the shell is 1.28mm, and the kernel rate is 53.59%.
3.  Rich nutrition: The red kernel coat is bright red. Apart from various nutrients beneficial to human body, the kernel feels crispy, oily and delicious. In particular, the red kernel coat has the content of anthocyanin and ellagitannin respectively at 107.32μg/kg and 56.85μg/kg, which are 6 times and 9 times that of ordinary walnut varieties in China.
4. Germination and maturity period: The germination period of red walnuts is 8 days and 12 days later than that of the ordinary walnut varieties in China, and the maturity period is 12 days and 18 days later, favorable for avoiding low temperature and evening frost in early spring.
5. Strong adaptability: Shengda red kernel walnut saplings have strong adaptability. They can grow normally and survive the winter safely in North Western China, thereby suitable for planting and promotion in main walnut planting areas.
6. High survival rate of grafting: The survival rate of red walnuts through branch graft, bud graft and indoor hotbed graft can be up to over 95%, favorable for rapid promotion and planting of red kernel walnuts.
